Finding Paradise in Fiji

written by Jenica Szymanski

Last Stop in Paradise by Travelling Lousies!

Friendly people, pristine beaches, and cheap luxury - a trip to Fiji will completely spoil you. You’ll never be the same - everywhere you go you’ll expect to be greeted by people singing on the shore, followed by a beach almost all to yourself.

Travelling Lousies! spent 18 days in the Yasawa Islands, a region popular with backpackers and other travelers who are seeking paradise on any budget.

Here’s how they began their trip:

“We hit Fiji a week ago now and spent 1 night on the mainland before we took the Yasawa Flyer (a huge catamaran containing a million backpackers and a few tourists) off to Nanuya Island Resort on the island of Nanuya Lailai. The island is idyllic with clear blue waters, palms, beautiful sandy beaches, glorious weather and very few other people!” (more…)

Then they headed to Waya:

“As for what we did….well more of the same; snorkelling was good with a great house reef just off the beach with some fantastic coral life and an array of fishies. Marissa added to the fishing tally by catching a big red cod hand line fishing (which she enjoyed trying to eat the next day….far too big) and many more books were read.” (more…)

And swam with Manta Rays in Naviti:

“The highlight was definitely a long swim alongside some big Manta Rays a stones throw from Botaira resort. Apparently it is slightly unseasonal for them to be around the island at the moment but we were lucky to have experienced their gracefullness (is that a word?) in the water with a few others as 4 large mantas glided around us accompanied by their cleaner fish! Some of the big guys were up to 2.5m across and certainly didn’t mind you snorkelling alongside of them - that was if you could keep up as they were enjoying swimming against the tide! ” (more…)

From Last Days on Vomo Beckon by Travelling Family

If kayaking in clear blue waters, snorkeling with colorful fish, fishing for Barracuda, or just kicking back with your toes in the sand sounds like your kind of vacation, you’ll find what you’re looking for on beautiful Vomo Island in Fiji. This is an especially great spring getaway for folks traveling with young children, as the resorts available on the island offer babysitting services, toys to keep the kids occupied, and plenty of other fun family activities. Traveling Family spent 10 days in Fiji unearthing the many treasures of Vomo Island – with two youngsters in tow, the parents have some great advice for other travelers taking vacation with their children.

Here’s an excerpt from their blog, Last Days on Vomo Beckon:

“I would recommend Vomo Island to anyone. It is small enough to be intimate, but big enough to be interesting. There is plenty to do here, or you can just watch the sea all day if you want. The snorkeling is fantastic, it is surrounded by a reef so perfect for this. If you have kids I suggest you book the services of a babysitter as they are excellent with them. If I came again I would book the babysitter for the whole week rather than in small chunks.

If you are on honeymoon or here on an anniversary it is very private. I don’t think the kids destroy the peace of the place, though I am biased, and we are the only family here currently. The bures are secluded enough that you don’t really see your neighbors unless you want to. I think the other couples here are quite friendly with each other, we are somewhat apart from them having the children with us as we don’t go on many of the activities such as snorkeling trips or sunset cruises.” (more…)

Steve, one of the members of Travelling Family, is a fisherman, and tries to make a catch whenever he can. He found awesome fishing in Vomo – check out this amazing shot which proves some “fish stories” are true! Here’s what Travelling Family write about the fishing in Vomo:

“Steve has returned from fishing, complete with a Dolphin Fish and a Barracuda. They were out until dusk, all three of them have beaming smiles on their faces, so looks like they have had fun. Steve already wants to return to Fiji and do some more deep sea fishing. I think the guys from Vomo also want him to come back, seems like he gave them all the fishing bug!” (more…)
