In need of a getaway? Why not travel to magnificent Montreal, Canada.

The second largest city in Canada, Montreal offers plenty of sights to see within walking distance or a short bus ride! The Olympic Stadium, home the 1976 games, is most popular for its unique circular shape. While at the Stadium, climb to the top of the world’s tallest inclined tower, the Tower of Montreal! Visit historic Old Montreal, originally a French settlement, this site loaded with history that is sure to captivate you. Finally, be sure to walk through one of the many churches, especially the beautiful Basilica Notre-Dame de Montreal. Completed in 1829, this glorious Basilica is known for its stain glass windows and brilliant paintings.

Realtraveler Gidget Bones describes a day of sightseeing in Montreal:

“I am home after 7 wonderful days and 6 fantastic nights in Montreal! The city was much more than I expected. Everyone was very friendly, even when I spoke broken French to them. I was running the entire time between work and functions. I did get to walk around the city one day. I started at 9am on Saturday and finished at 10pm that night. I went shopping, and sight seeing. I stopped at every cathedral and took pictures. I went to Ste. Marie, China Town, Old Town, Latin Quarter, on the metro, there was so much history to see.” (more…)

Looking for unique weekend getaway ideas from Vancouver? Then you’ll definitely want to check out Victoria, the provincial capital of British Columbia in Canada. Located on the southern tip of Vancouver Island, a short ferry boat ride across the beautiful Strait of Juan de Fuca from both Vancouver and Port Angeles, Washington (only a two and a half hour drive from Seattle) this is an ideal spot for a weekend getaway for American’s and Canadian’s alike, with a quaint, relaxing british atmosphere, and some great attractions.

While there, be sure not to miss seeing the British Columbia Parliament Buildings, a gorgeous example of neo-baroque architecture by day, and a stunning display of lights by night. Other popular sites to see in Victoria include the authentic totem poles of Thunderbird Park, and the neighboring Royal British Columbia Museum, one of the centerpieces of the island’s tourism industry. Hungry? Then don’t forget to head downtown to visit Canada’s oldest Chinatown district, where you’ll not only experience a taste of great Chinese cuisine, but the cultural flavor of British Columbia’s large Chinese population as well.

But don’t take my word about what a great place this is for a short weekend getaway. Here’s what RealTraveler JenJen had to say about her recent trip to Victoria from Vancouver:

“From Vancouver we headed to Victoria, on Vancouver Island, for a few days. Victoria is similar in many ways to Vancouver, although much smaller.

We had a lovely few days, during which we visited the Royal British Columbia Museum, which was awesome and probably one of the best museums we have been to on our travels. It has some fantastic (and very lifelike) dioramas, and is well thought out, well laid out and easy to explore.

We also visited Fisherman’s Wharf, where not only are lots of fishing and sailing boats moored, but there are a lot of floating houses (I think this is the best way to describe them, they are not house boats). These were really cool, lots of them were for sale at very reasonable prices, but I am not sure I would feel comfortable living on one!

Thunderbird Park contains lots of amazing totem poles… We also had a look a parliament house; we didn’t get inside for a look but it looks pretty good from the outside, especially by night, although I wouldn’t want to be the one paying the power bill!

Underwater World does exactly what it says on the tin, the highlight of this would have to be the live show, where an insane diver gets into the freezing water, and displays and talks about the fish / sea creatures. These include a huge octopus which seemed quite happy to be handled, some huge crabs, and a very large starfish which ‘attacks’ the diver!” (more…)

The beauty and slow-paced relaxation of Victoria also make it a great destination for couples looking for a quiet, romantic weekend getaway, so what are you waiting for? Not only is this place gorgeous, it’s so close to the major cities of Vancouver and Seattle that you’d be doing yourself a disservice if you passed it up, and with plenty of Victoria Hotels to accommodate you, from the expensive ultra-posh to small, affordable boutique hotels, there’s definitely no reason not to see it for yourself.
