Visiting the St. Louis Zoo

written by Teresa Nielsen

In need of a family adventure? Get ready for some excitement as you take the kids to visit the fabulous city of St. Louis, Missouri!

Buckle up, as you and your family take a ride on the Zooline Railroad at the renowned St. Louis Zoo. Enjoy free admission to this marvelous place, set in the surrounding beauty of Forest Park. Home to over 800 species of animals, your children will be entertained for hours. Also, be sure to check out the Animals Always Sculpture and of course, the petting zoo! However, if a train ride through the zoo doesn’t catch your interest, then a tram ride to the top of the Gateway Arch is sure to enthrall! You will see some spectacular views, as you climb 630 feet to the top!

As you travel though the city, check out the many fascinating museums and historical sites. St. Louis offers something for everyone! Done touring the zoo? You will love a trip to the Museum of Transportation, or even the Old Courthouse, location of the infamous Dred Scott Trial.

If you are looking for some sunshine, visit Cahokia Mounds, located just outside of St. Louis, in Collinsville, Illinois. Here at the site of an ancient Indian civilization, you can take a publicly guided tour, or take the kids on a self-guided tape tour which includes 3 different hikes!

Realtravelers Kyle & Dan describe their trip to St. Louis:

“Across from The Arch, not on the riverfront side but on the downtown side, we walked to the old courthouse, a splendid white building that looked very elegant with a large lawn on one side and a beautiful fountain on the other. We took a stroll down to Washington Street so we could gain views of the early 1900’s architecture. Many old warehouses and buildings were being converted into loft apartments and offices, so several places had been restored to their original beauty. From Washington Street, we cut across downtown St. Louis to check out Busch stadium.” (more…)
