If a trip to California is tickling your imagination, you won’t regret taking the time to cruise down Highway 1 along the spectacular coast. This drive is one in a million, with breathtaking scenery along every mile. A particular 17 of those miles have become quite famous, known simply as the 17-Mile Drive. This magnificently scenic drive passes through Pacific Grove and Pebble Beach. Favorite sights along the way include the upscale golf courses and mansions of Pebble Beach, beautiful Spanish Bay, and the Lone Cypress Tree. Definitely take the time to make plenty of stops along the way to soak in the scenic views, ornate mansions, and lovely coastal hills.
RealTravelers Dove and Josh recently made their way down the coast, stopping at the Monterey Aquarium along the way, taking in the sights of the 17-Mile Drive, and camping at Phifefer State Park. Here’s an excerpt from their travel blog, Big Sur Coast:
“So down the coast we went. And what a drive it was. Wow. If you’ve never done the Big Sur drive, it’s a must. Our first stop was in Monterey, at the aquarium there, which is one of the best in the world. We had a blast playing in the touch pools and watching the sea otters. They even had a great white shark, even if it was just a baby. And the jellyfish were really cool…
We continued down to Phifefer State Park and camped there, then hiked there in the morning. We also found the Phifefer Beach, this amazing and secluded beach where the waves crash against rock formations…you can’t describe it, you have to see it. And while you’re there, grab a bottle of wine and make it a picnic. Or at least we did, since it was Josh’s 30th birthday!!! We also stopped at Nepenthe for lunch, which overlooks the pacific about 1000 ft. up perched on the cliff. So totally James Bond. We loved it.” (more…)
