Erg Chebbi Sand Dunes in Merzouga

written by Corry Seibert

The lovely village of Merzouga is the gateway to extreme desert adventure. Take a camel ride across the glittering sands of the Sahara, zoom to the peaks of the Erg Chebbi dunes in a rented dune buggy, or relax with your feet up under shade trees and alongside refreshing canals in town. Merzouga is a fantastic place to spend a couple of days while in Morocco, especially because of the Erg Chebbi dunes — the highest dune reaches almost 500 feet!

RealTraveler Shane S captured this striking photo on his recent adventure to Erg Chebbi. Here are his thoughts on the experience from his travel blog, Merzouga (Erg Chebbi Dunes) Moroco:

“I arrived in Merzouga which basically juts up against the Erg Chebbi sand dunes in time for sunset. And what a beautiful sunset! When the sun sets the sand takes on different hues. Obviously the sand is all one color… but it sort of changes along with the height and angle of each dune and it is a breathtaking sight. One to see before you leave this world…

My final night I took a camel ride out into the desert where we slept in tents underneath the stars. The berbers cooked for us and we chatted and watched the stars. One of the Berbers had a drum and played and sang for us too.” (more…)
