Stirling, Scotland

If you’ve never been to the Highlands of Scotland, let traveler Redfishman show you around in his blog, Scotland. A fisherman from Clearwater, Florida, Redfishman traveled to Scotland without a specific itinerary in mind, aside from visiting the town of his surname’s origin. He feasted on bangers -n- mash, Guinness, and haggis in Edinburgh, then headed to “the quaint and small fishing village” of Crail, where his family took their name. Of this unique experience, Redfishman writes:

“To stand on the harbor wall and look out over the small harbor and over the Firth of Forth where my forbearers once made their living off the sea was a unique experience. For me the ocean and water have always been part of me, I thought of the first boat I bought when I was thirteen. Those first trips by myself at such a young age on the lakes, river and bayous of old Florida. I understood finally why I am so at home on the water.” (more…)

Traveling onward, Redfishman visited the ruins of St. Andrew’s Cathedral, then headed to Discovery Point in Dundee where he saw the HMS Unicorn, Britain’s oldest floating ship. Finally reaching the beautiful highlands, he toured the Edradour Distillery in Pitlochry, which he writes was “once owned by America gangsters during prohibition.” He enjoyed one of the best Scotch Whiskeys he’s ever had here.

After many adventures to historic forts and splendid natural wonders, Redfishman found himself in Stirling for the last leg of his trip. Today’s travel photo of the day was captured by Redfishman, and can be found, along with other fantastic photos, in his travel blog, Stirling, Gateway to the Highlands. Here’s an excerpt:

“I think that Stirling saved the best for the last of our trip. We visited Stirling Castle, Stirling Bridge, and the Wallace Memorial. Edinburgh is the cultural and political center of Scotland, but Stirling may be the ancient heart of the Scotland. Stirling history dates back to Roman times, and once was the capital of Scotland. It’s history is replete with many battles to control the area and is considered the southern gateway to the Highlands. Stirling Castle is an impressive fortification, and fantastic view of City. Stirling Bridge is the site of William Wallace’s most notable victory over the English. (Even though the movie Braveheart didn’t feature a bridge). The Wallace memorial is an impressive monument to Scotland’s struggle for independence and self determination.

My only regret was not having more time to spend in Stirling.” (more…)
