Spain-Last stop before home!!! by Popple

If you were inspired by our travel expert’s itinerary for Spain, one read of Popple’s experiences is sure to have you planning a trip there in no time. The Manchester native spent just over two weeks touring this fabulous European country on a budget, proving that plenty of sights can still be seen and enjoyed with any travel style.

After a spending time in Madrid, Cordoba, and Seville, Popple wandered over to Colmenar to visit some family. She writes:

“They were staying in a lovely cottage just outside of Colmenar (which is where they are having a lovely house built). There were olive, lemon, almond, pomegranate and I can’t remember how many other trees in the garden. It was just such a beautiful and peaceful place to be and in the “real” Spain - not where there are too many tourists. Got to try some more lovely Tapas in the village…”

She then hopped over to Valencia:

“I only had one afternoon and one full day here so I walked all around and visited the inevitable Cathedral and various other landmarks. Quite a lot of history ranging from Roman and Gothic to Renaissance and the like, so lots to see if you like that sort of thing. There are, I was told, some good beaches nearby, although I didn’t really have time to get to them unfortunately. Obviously a good place for hostels and the food was great, a different kind of tapas here, more like open sandwiches really, but very good ones. I also tried the Paella as this is where it’s supposed to have originated - yummy and very filling, you wouldn’t be able to do much walking around after that little lot!!!!”

And last but not least, she fell in love with Barcelona:

“I was really looking forward to going to Barcelona as I had heard so much about it and I wasn’t disappointed. There is lots to see and it’s a very vibrant and up to the minute place…I visited the compulsory Cathedral and other historical sights, but the highlight for me was The Sagrada Familia that Gaudi designed - brilliant and I went around and around and up in the lift to the top of one of the spires, the carvings and the ideas were just amazing. To think that this was all designed before 1926 and yet it feels and appears so modern and it isn’t even finished yet!!! You all have to go and see it if you haven’t already been…” (more…)

Never mind the Blisters…here’s the Fringe Festival! by icehockeypunk11

August in Edinburgh means a feast for the senses. Streets are overflowing with patrons of the arts, all gathering in Scotland’s capital city for the world-famous Edinburgh Festival. This annual four week extravaganza is a collection of events including the renowned Edinburgh Fringe, now the largest performing arts festival in the world, the International Festival, and the International Film Festival.

Of course, Edinburgh has a lot to offer any time of the year, with its historic sites, dramatic architecture, vibrant nightlife, and abundance of museums, but anyone who has visited in August will tell you about their unforgettable experience at the festival. Today’s photo of the day was taken by Realtraveler and California native icehockeypunk11, who took part in the Edinburgh Fringe this month. Here is an excerpt from her blog:

“The excitement and intensity to work that surrounds you can practically be touched. You walk everywhere, and everywhere you walk you’re sure to run into about 15 different theatre venues in any chosen direction, or a bundle of performers trying to promote their show. And yeah…there’s that whole kilt and bagpipe thing too, makes it that much better.” (more…)

Click here to see one of icehockeypunk11’s photographs for a glimpse of a typical day during the festival. If you’re a fan of theatre, art, film, or cultural heritage, consider planning a trip there next year!
