Part III: The Greek Islands, Sifnos by Snowbird

Planning a last minute trip this fall? September and October is a great time to head to the Greek Islands. With school back in session for other travelers, you’ll find less crowds and lower prices on flights and hotels. Here is some inspiration to get you island hopping in no time!

Off on her honeymoon, Sarah B divided a relaxing two week vacation between Santorini, Naxos and Paros:

“Paros is a great island with rolling hills, pretty beaches, and nice towns. We stayed outside of Parikia (the main port town). The full-day boat tour around the island was incredible. We enjoyed going to Parikia for evening strolls by the pier and nice dinners with fantastic sunsets. We also took a trip to Naoussa, a smaller town on the eastern side of the island. Many restaurants strung up lines draped with freshly caught fish and octopus. It was great to be on small island, where a cheap taxi ride will get you across the island.” (more…)

She especially enjoyed “low key” Naxos:

“Naxos was definitely the most low-key island, but there still plenty to see and do! In fact, Naxos is the largest island in the Cyclades. So, it has some varied landscapes, different types of beaches and coves, and hills and valleys. Plus it has room for plenty of goats. Naxos town has incredible old Venetian buildings, lots of interesting doors and narrow, winding passageways, and a hip waterfront with cafes serving coffee frappes, milkshakes, crepes, and, of course, souvlaki galore!!” (more…)

As part of their European Vacation, Snowbird and her husband recently traveled to Athens, Santorini and Sifnos:

“We spent our three days in Sifnos exploring the local tavernas, beaches, churches and shops. Andrew attempted to rent a scooter and failed the driving test (!!!). So we rented a car to get around the tiny island, amazed by the endless vistas and welcomed by very friendly people everywhere we went.”

They particularly enjoyed staying at Delphini:

“Our hosts at Delphini were especially warm–George was constantly advertising his wife’s homemade cooking, ‘Bepe is making something very special for you tonight! Fresh fish, salad, beans, fried potatoes, dessert….” and his father’s house wine, ‘This wine, it is made by my father for many years. You will like it.’ Indeed we did.

Adding to the family ambiance were George and Bepe’s children running around the grounds, playing soccer and eating dinner with the guests. The groundskeepers had to be grandparents or aunts and uncles–they only spoke greek and were working very hard, watering the plants, cleaning the rooms, making things perfect. It was truly a family-run establishment, but still very private and romantic. We could have stayed there all week.” (more…)
