Central/Northern Highlands & Perthshire by Scott & Nancy

If Scotland is on your list of places to see in Europe this summer, follow Scott & Nancy’s recent two week trip for inspiration on where to go. After arriving in Edinburgh, they began a road trip to the highlands which included visiting small towns, castles, local breweries and other scenic stops along the way.

Here’s an excerpt from their visit to Edinburgh and the Central Highlands :

“We based ourselves in Portree and lucked out on our first full day (after days of overcast skies and on and off rain) to have a beautiful sunny day. We took advantage and ventured out for a number of great walks on the western side of the island. And you can never run into enough sheep along the way – on the road and otherwise. The single lane roads in a portion of the island can be very fun as well.” (more…)

And from their visit to Central/Northern Highlands & Perthshire :

“Onward back to the mainland, we took a detour through a small and sleepy harbor town of Plockton for a little walk and then drove on to the wee little town of Torridon which sits on Loch Torridon on the west coast of the highlands. Lovely drive – back to the forested area with stunning views. Unfortunately, the next morning called for rain, and we were determined to find the sun so we drove on to Loch Ness in central Scotland. Funny enough, we happened upon another micro brewer here at the Black Isle Brewery (are you surprised?). Met the owner/brewer, Dave, and had a nice chat and tour here as well. We found a great little B&B along the east side of Loch Ness. Beautiful loch, but no Nessy sightings. Too bad really, but had a nice picnic on the shore in hopes of a sighting. ” (more…)

Iquitos by Jim & Nats Big Trip

For RealTravelers, Jim & Nats Big Trip, the Pilpintuwasi Butterfly Farm and Amazon Animal Orphanage was the highlight of their trip to Iquitos, Peru:

“We took a motor taxi, then a river boat on the Amazon, then walked fifteen minutes through a lovely little town on the banks of the river to reach the paradise animal hideaway, Pilpintuwasi.

We were greeted by the owner, a very dedicated woman (possibly dutch), who had moved to Peru 20 odd years ago. She set up the butterfly farm in 1995 but it has turned into much more than that.

She has rescued many animals; very friendly monkeys that sit on your head or shoulders grooming you and wee down your back when they REALLY like you!! A Jaguar, an anteater, turtles, caiman, parrots and of course a large butterfly enclosure.” (more…)
