From Mont Saint Michel by mvolz
If you’d like to step back into medieval times and explore charming houses, shops, and museums dating back to the 16th century, come to Mont St. Michel, a breathtaking tidal island located in Normandy, France. Known as a wonder of the western world, Mont St. Michel was deemed a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979 and welcomes over 3 million visitors each year. One of the highlights of this ancient island are the Benedictine Abbey of Saint Michel, an extraordinary work of architecture built high upon the rocks of this mountain island.
Recently, RealTraveler mvolz , a student studying in France, visited Mont St. Michel and was able to explore the town and take a guided tour of the abbey. Here’s a passage from her journal, Mont St. Michel:
“After getting our itinerary for the day we were left to go exploring for ourselves before the “official” guided tour started. At the base of Mont Saint Michel after you enter the gates there are buildings crowded in together like a small village at the base. Most of these are very touristy places of restaurants and souvenir shop. The road winds upward and around the base and many stairs are climbed until you realize you are above the “village” and actually up into the grounds of the abbey itself. The paths go around three sides of the abbey and there are numerous little green areas and even a tiny grave yard.
Upon entering there are tons more stairs to climb until you get to the official entrance for the large chapel. The chapel is immense and was filled with stained glass windows and the room was filled with a murky green light filtering through the windows….” (more…)
