The Second Anniversary of the 2004 Tsunami in Southeast Asia

Rebuilding after the Tsunami by The Journeyers
Today marks the second anniversary of the tsunami that devastated many parts of Southeast Asia. As villages and tourist areas rebuild, travelers are returning to reflect, discover and enjoy this amazing part of the world.
The Journeyers, two RealTravelers who continue their year traveling around the world, recently visited Khao Lak, Thailand and shared their experience:
“Khao Lak is one of the areas of Thailand that was hit hardest by the Tsunami in 2004. I naively asked if there were a lot of casualties and was informed that 30 to 40 percent of the population died that day. The amount of rebuilding going on is massive but the psychological trauma is harder to recover from. Locals essentially don’t go to the beach anymore.” (more…)
And how the area is rebuilding:
“On a positive note, the rebuilding process is going well and the tourists are coming back. That means that the jobs are returning and the means of support for the community.
Khao Lak is essentially dependent on Scuba Divers for its economy. It is the closest point of departure to the Similan Islands. The number of dive shops is pretty unreal. The main road through town is lined with them and scattered among the dive shops are restaurants, shops, and the occasional hotel. It is a pleasant place to spend a few days. I left really hoping that things go well for the people there as they continue to assemble a life from the catastrophe.” (more…)
