From The Marrakech Express by The Honeymoon

What does it mean to immerse yourself within another culture? Is it even possible? How do you wipe clean the photo album within your heart and mind of all the pictures captured from a lifetime of living a certain way, in a certain landscape with its own mores, laws, traditions and values? RealTravel members The Honeymoon are doing their best to surrender themselves to the beauties of cultures different from their own as they travel through Russia, Rwanda, and Morocco this summer.

They recently trekked and camped in the Sahara Desert, traveling by camel during the day and sleeping under the vast expanse of the African sky by night. They’ve met many interesting locals on their journeys and written lovely journals about their experiences.

Here is how The Honeymoon describe the bustling markets of Marrakech:

“Marrakech: a wonderful, sensual, whirling epicenter of chaos and magic and fuel for the imagination. true to its reputation, Marrakech is hot and bustling and bursting at the seams with life. the city thrives around a medina whose heart is the famous square jemma el fna and whose veins are the complicated labyrinth of souks that feed into it. it is truly the mother of all markets and under the inky sky and shimmering moon you will find snake charmers, magicians, shamans, fortune tellers, dancers, musicians, story tellers, henna painters, trained monkeys, rows and rows of orange juice stands, food stalls which have everything from boiled goat heads to brains and miscellaneous meat kabobs to escargot. the souk is a seemingly infinite expanse of stalls displaying a kaleidoscope of blankets, slippers, lanterns, tea pots, trays, jewelry and pottery amidst other local handiwork. life here seems to ebb and flow according to the heat, and Marrakech is a city of the night jumping to life when dusk is cracked open.” (more…)

The Honeymoon write about post-war Rwanda with equal passion in their moving journal, Into Rwanda. Immerse yourself in a different culture by following their inspiring travels, and then tell us about an inspiring travel experience you’ve had!

Crystalo in Bolivia

This is Yungas, one of many cute, playful monkeys that traveling team, Crystalo, worked with while volunteering at a wildlife refuge in Villa Tunari, Bolivia. Crystalo says working in the refuge was strenuous, but they seemed to have as much fun spending time with the monkeys as the monkeys had with them:

“Monkeys are probably the cutest animals I’ve ever spent time with. They are so playful and fun… I had a few favorites there that I am missing so much. This one monkey wouldn’t eat unless I was there helping her, she would always try to feed me her food, it was so adorable. This same monkey would cuddle up in my lad and sleep while holding my hand, she would also look for bugs in my hair if I let her. Most of the monkeys there were Capuchin monkeys, they are smaller and really cute. they had a few Spider monkeys that are really big and remind me a lot of people. These monkeys have an amazing prehensile tail. They also had 2 howler monkeys which make a lot of noise, they don’t howl so much as roar really loudly. I hope that some day I get back to Bolivia so I can go back and see my monkeys again.” (more…)
