The Art of Tea Making in the Cameron Highlands

Traveling through Southeast Asia and missing the majestic Rocky Mountains they’re used to at home, RealTravel members Michelle and Susan headed to the Cameron Highlands in Malaysia where mountains abound and trekkers may enjoy gorgeous scenery and a peaceful atmosphere. Tucked in the Highlands is a BOH tea plantation where visitors may learn all about how tea is harvested and made at the museum, and watch the local tea harvesters in action. Michelle and Susan found the tea plantation one of the highlights of their trip through Southeast Asia:

“One awesome find was the BOH tea plantation. It was highly recommended that we take a tour up to the plantation, so we instead took a bus and hiked in. The bus was neat, and at approximately $0.20 CDN , quite a bargain. We were dropped at “the junction”, a giant produce market at the base of the peninsula’s highest peak, Galung. We shared the narrow road with speedy local cars and stray cats. Tons of tropical flowers, and tea plants everywhere, growing sometimes completely perpendicular to the steeply sloping terrain. The deep emerald of the tea leaves was set off by the ever-present mist and was beautiful. The walk also gave us a chance to talk to some tea “snippers” and take pictures on the way up to the tea factory.” (more…)

After sipping tea and enjoying “chocolate melt cake,” Michelle and Susan took off for a jungle walk that offered a stunning view of the valley and the opportunity to meet a cantankerous lizard.
