Santorini by Flying Standby

Santorini, one of the picture perfect islands of Greece, is a favorite destination for island hopping travelers, and for those who want to call one island home for awhile. Two RealTravelers who work for the airline industry, cleverly named Flying Standby, recently spend three nights here and were immediately enchanted:

“On an overnight ferry from Athens, scheduled to arrive in Santorini at 8 am, we woke up in time to make our way onto the deck and see the ship approach the island. The view was surreal and breathtaking and the island was covered in a misty haze, slightly shrouded in mystery. This island formed by the explosion of it’s volcano in 1500 B.C., is believed by some to be the site where the advanced civilization of “Atlantis” once stood. The explosion of Santorini was the biggest explosion ever witnessed by human beings, 36 km in height, sending debris throughout Turkey and the eastern Mediterranean and probably caused the end of the Minoan civilization on the island of Crete.” (more…)

With only two weeks to spend in Greece, Flying Standby choose to travel to Athens and the Cyclades islands of Santorini, Naxos and Mykonos. Check out their travel blog for more about their travels.

The Tigris River is 1,150 miles long, rising in the gorgeous mountains of Turkey , and the Kalesi ruins were built as defenses against the Assyrians and archeologists are unearthing their amazing secrets. Here is what Taisteal had to say about these two fantastic sites:

“The presence of Mosques and graveyards really ring a sense of community to the complex. In the graveyard on top of the hill, a lone local sits among the grass singing his prayers (see photo). The drop into the Tigris is quite spectacular. Houses perched right against the cliff face.” (more…)
