From A Conference in Rome by Dan

With the Winter Olympics just a few weeks away, all eyes (or mine anyway) are about to turn to Torino (Turin), Italy, the site of this year’s games. If you are traveling to Italy for this event, or are inpired to check out Italy sometime soon, you may want to include a trip to the historic city of Rome.

Dan traveled to Rome this fall, and gave some great tips for visiting some of the sites, including the Roman Coliseum (a great place to visit stray cats, by the way):

“I spent more than 4 hours there, just wandering around. (You could visit it in 60 minutes if youre not an architecture fanatic.) Its huge, held around 50,000 people, and is still a marvel after nearly 2000 years. (Even though 2/3rds of the outer shell is missing, thats why it has that funny asymmetric shape it wasnt built that way!) Now 4 hours is a bit much, but easy to spend if you manage to get inside. The lines can be long, so go early (or late) to avoid the midday crush. The audio tour is a bit long and tedious. But you can hire yourself one of the guides that roam the place. Some of them are superb, and they react to your interests. Not a bad deal.” (more…)

Check out Peanut, Lonesome Traveler, and The Wanderer’s journals for more tips and photos that may inspire you to wander the streets of Rome.
