Today’s Featured Travel Destination: Istanbul
From Very Old Things by Wanderer
As the largest and former capital city of Turkey, Istanbul is a lively tourist destination with plenty of attractions - great architecture, famous shopping in the bustling marketplaces, and an interesting and diverse culture. I traveled to Istanbul in 2001 and was almost overwhelmed by this historic city, once named “Constantinople.” Wanderer traveled to Istanbul earlier this month, and shared some great things to do, one of which is visiting the Hagia Sofia, a former Eastern Orthodox Church that was converted into a mosque and is now a museum. Here’s an excerpt of her description of this popular site:
“You’re immediately impressed by how very large it all is, starting with the huge doors you enter through. Your eyes are immediately drawn up to the dome, which is very high and supported by very large pillars and walls and semi domes and arches. The main body of the church is huge (although half of it was full of scaffolding for the ongoing restoration projects.).” (more…)
